A walkie-talkie app for iPhone that works with no signal
TalkGroup turns iPhones and AirPods into walkie-talkies. Phones connect straight to each other, so you can talk when there are no bars and no Wi-Fi.
TalkGroup is coming soon to the App Store.
How it works
Most push-to-talk apps send your voice through the internet. That is the problem in the places you need them most: a packed venue where the cell network gives up, a ship at sea, a mountain, a campsite.
TalkGroup skips the internet. Your iPhone finds the phones of the people in your group and talks to them directly. Hold the button, speak, and let go. Everyone in the group hears you in their AirPods.
- No signal needed. No cell service and no internet. Wi-Fi is optional.
- No accounts. No sign-up, no email, no phone number. Pick a name and go.
- Groups. Talk to everyone in your group at once, up to 8 phones.
- Private. Your voice goes between the phones in your group and nowhere else. There are no servers.
- Quick to join. Tap phones together, scan a QR code, or open an invite link.
What you need
- An iPhone for each person in the group.
- AirPods, ideally with noise cancellation, so you hear each other over the noise. Other headphones work too.
- To be fairly close to each other. Phones talk directly, so range depends on your surroundings. Open space carries farther. Crowds, walls, and steel shorten it.
Questions
Does it need cell service or Wi-Fi?
No. Phones connect directly to each other. If everyone is on the same Wi-Fi network, TalkGroup can use it too, but it never needs it.
How far does it reach?
It depends on where you are. Phones need to be fairly close, think the same section of a venue or the same part of a campsite. Crowds, walls, and metal shorten the range.
Does it work on Android?
Not yet. TalkGroup is for iPhone.
Is it free?
Talking in groups is free. Optional one-time upgrades keep groups forever and add text chat.
